We LOST A RARE GEM I arrived from Nigeria an hour ago and it is with great sadness that I write to wish our brother Newton Ekpo farewell. I am quite sad that I will not be in Sacramento in person to pay my last respect to this beloved family friend; a true and selfless Nigerian and patriot. Newton was one of the few Nigerians we first met in California in 1990. He attended every celebration we had in Davis for he was a generous and kind soul. He was a good and unpretentious Christian who did not hold malice against others. He genuinely loved us and he fully celebrated with us in those moments of our accomplishments. I am also sad that Newton did not wait to witness the educational success of his children. He sacrificed so much for them and he genuinely loved them. Newton fought a good fight and he surely has received the Crown of Glory. He was a true witness of the word to many and particularly to the Nigerian community. On several occasions Brother Ekpo would call me to discuss issues affecting the Nigerian community in Sacramento. As a pastoral counselor he did his best to support our people. He once told me he wanted to write a book on family matters from the Christian perspective and I promised to read and review it for him. But alas his illness did not allow him to do so. My condolences to Lucy, the children, family and friends of Brother Newton Ekpo. Sleep on our beloved Brother Ekpo Sleep, and take your eternal rest Lay down your head upon your Savior's breast We love you well, but Jesus loves you best May your place of rest be of glory. Good Night. Professor J.K. Olupona, NNOM Harvard University, Cambridge, MA
